HÅNDVÆRKSKOLLEGIET

Fischer's in-house production developed custom-made curtain tracks to complete the soft architectural geometry at the crafts college Håndværkskollegiet. Our roller blind systems were also selected for the project, which received an honourable mention in the Residential category at the Building of the Year awards in Denmark.

Located in Herning, Håndværkskollegiet provides housing for Danish craft apprentices. Designed by Dorte Mandrup Architects, the building combines refined detailing, high-quality materials, and traditional wood craftsmanship that reflect the residents' trades. Fischer supplied curtain tracks and roller blinds for the project, delivering effective solar shading for the college’s 84 residential units, communal kitchens, workshops, and the warden’s residence.

CUSTOM-MADE TRACKS AND BRACKETS

To accommodate the unique architecture, Fischer manufactured custom-curved tracks that allow the soft curtains to glide seamlessly across windows and doorways. In the residential units, track sections were curved to a radius of either 57 cm or 67 cm, depending on the room's dimension. This design enables the curtain to move smoothly past the protruding wooden section between the window and wall while stacking neatly against the wall when open.

During installation, the wall bracket design was further refined to enhance the overall aesthetic. The screw holes were redesigned to be more discreet, and the bracket's shape was adjusted to a more cohesive look with the curtain rail. An additional curtain track was integrated into the window recess, offering residents the flexibility to install blackout curtains when needed.

ROLLER BLINDS FOR VARYING CEILING HEIGHTS

The black finish of the curtain rails, brackets, and gliders was mirrored in the roller blinds supplied by Fischer for Håndværkskollegiet. As the building features spaces with varying ceiling heights, the project required both motorised and manually operated blind systems. Fischer Roller Blind Plus was selected for windows positioned out of reach, while Fischer Roller Blind Classic with chain operation was chosen where users needed manual light control.

Both systems were chosen for their ability to integrate seamlessly with the project's architectural vision, where functionality, daylight management, and materiality were key considerations. Throughout the process, Fischer collaborated closely with the client to ensure all materials, finishes, and colours were aligned. The final result is a harmonious, durable, and highly effective solar shading solution that supports the architectural vision while contributing to the calm and crafted atmosphere for which the building was designed.
